Baseball Preview: University Prep Jaguars vs. Silverado Hawks
The University Prep Jaguars will look to defend their home field on Monday against the Silverado Hawks at 3:15 p.m. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
University Prep put the finishing touches on their fifth blowout victory of the season on Monday. Everything went their way against Boron as University Prep made off with an 11-5 victory. The win was just what University Prep needed coming off of an 11-1 loss in their prior contest.
Jayden Castillo was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a double. Another player making a difference was David Gomez, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, a triple, and an RBI.
Meanwhile, Silverado beat Granite Hills 6-2 on Monday.
Jace Weiss tossed a big game, tossing five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits (he also didn't allow any walks). Steven Gomez came in to relieve Weiss and was airtight, giving up no runs, hits or walks in his two innings pitched.
At the plate, Jayden Pauling and Isaac Ramirez did most of the damage at the plate: Pauling scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3, while Ramirez went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a double. Uriel Martin was another key contributor, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.
University Prep's victory bumped their record up to 9-4. As for Silverado, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-8.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. University Prep has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Silverado struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.2. The only question left is which team can snag more.
University Prep suffered a grim 13-1 defeat to Silverado when the teams last played back in April of 2021. Thankfully for University Prep, Ian Wilson (who kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out six over five innings pitched) won't be suiting up this time.
