Clinton Prairie and Lafayette Central Catholic are an even 4-4 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Gophers will venture away from home to face off against the Knights at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Clinton Prairie is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.9 runs per game this season.
Clinton Prairie will bounce into Wednesday's match after beating Delphi Community, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Gophers put the hurt on the Oracles with a sharp 9-2 victory on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Gophers have posted against the Oracles since April 10, 2019.
Sadie Weliver made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits. Weliver was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Lily Coleman was excellent, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Zelda Wampler was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Lafayette Central Catholic was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their tenth straight loss. They came up short against Twin Lakes, falling 16-1.
Lafayette Central Catholic saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Corinne Zehring, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base. Ellie Walter also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Lafayette Central Catholic's defeat dropped their record down to 1-13. As for Clinton Prairie, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season.
Lafayette Central Catholic's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Clinton Prairie has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.2 hits per game. It's a different story for Lafayette Central Catholic, though, as they've been averaging 12 hits. Given Clinton Prairie's sizable advantage in that area, the Knights will need to find a way to close that gap.
Clinton Prairie couldn't quite finish off Lafayette Central Catholic when the teams last played back in May of 2023 and fell 8-6. Can the Gophers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
