Top 100 winningest high school football programs of all-time

By Kevin Askeland Jul 10, 2020, 2:15pm

Georgia's Valdosta remains on top, but three Kentucky schools join 900-win club.

Perhaps it's no coincidence that three Kentucky schools are turning the quest for the all-time winningest high school football program into a horse race. In a state known for the Kentucky Derby and thoroughbred horses, Kentucky is home to three schools that all went over 900 all-time wins last year.

Male (Louisville) took over the all-time lead in the state with 906 wins after a 14-1 season. Meanwhile, Highlands (Fort Thomas) held on to No. 2 in the state at 901. Mayfield also joined the two at 900 wins after a 13-2 season last year.

All three schools have been gaining ground on all-time leader Valdosta (Ga.), which has 932 all-time wins and until last year was the only school in the United States with over 900. Valdosta went 10-3 last year, but gained four extra wins last year after the Georgia High School Football Historians Association (GHSFHA) website restored four wins over college JV teams from the 1930s which were previously listed as exhibition games.

Valdosta and the three Kentucky schools head the list of the MaxPreps Top 100 all-time winningest high school football programs. The list is compiled using various sources, including school websites, historical websites (such as GHSFHA), state association websites, the NFHS record book and Football Friday Nights (which continues the work of Robert Fawcett, who previously had compiled lists of all-time winningest programs).

One thing to note is that different websites often have different all-time totals for schools based on information that is available. When possible, MaxPreps goes with the authority that is closest in relation to the school (such as a school website or state association).

Other notes...

California has new leader

For many years, Bakersfield has been the all-time wins leader in California. That changed last year when Long Beach Poly, which was tied with Bakersfield heading into the 2019 season, went 8-4 compared to Bakersfield going 6-6. Poly is now at 801 wins compared to Bakersfield's 799.

Arkansas leaders tied

Little Rock Central and Pine Bluff enter the 2020 season tied for the all-time win total in the state at 810. That lead is in danger, however, because of the threat of Nashville. While Little Rock and Pine Bluff have struggled in recent seasons, Nashville has become a powerhouse and has climbed to 797 wins.

Washington Massillon back on top?

The Tigers, who have won more national championships than any other school, have posted back-to-back 14-1 seasons (a school record for single season wins) to move up to 899 all-time wins. If the three Kentucky schools don't eventually overtake Valdosta, then Washington Massillon might.
Valdosta is the winningest high school football program of all-time.
