Basketball Game Preview: New Braunfels Unicorns vs. Pieper Warriors

The New Braunfels Unicorns will take on the Pieper Warriors at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

On Friday, New Braunfels opened the new year with a less-than-successful 37-29 loss to Boerne. The Unicorns have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Despite the defeat, New Braunfels had strong showings from Alyana Mcgarity, who went 6 for 13 on her way to 17 points, and Riley Lundergreen, who posted four points.

Even though they lost, New Braunfels smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in seven consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Pieper had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26 points) and they went ahead and made it five on Tuesday. They walked away with a 58-51 win over the Greyhounds. Given the Warriors' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 37th, while the Greyhounds are ranked 153rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Pieper is on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 15 games, which provided a nice bump to their 18-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.3 points per game. As for New Braunfels, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-13.

New Braunfels suffered a grim 55-29 defeat to Pieper when the teams last played back in November of 2024. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Pieper's Alisha Peavy, who went 7 of 11 on her way to 18 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals.
