Basketball Recap: Tygarts Valley Falls Despite Big Games from Kailen Yokum and Summer Lewis-Smith

If Tygarts Valley was feeling good fresh off their 66-40 takedown of Clay-Battelle last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Tygarts Valley Bulldogs came up short against the Pocahontas County Warriors on Monday, falling 54-28. The Bulldogs haven't had much luck with the Warriors recently, as the team's come up short the last five times they've met.

Summer Lewis-Smith and Kailen Yokum certainly did their best on Monday to avoid the loss. Lewis-Smith posted six points along with six rebounds and three steals, while Yokum earned eight points and eight boards.

Even though they lost, Tygarts Valley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in 13 consecutive games.

Pocahontas County was led to victory by Riley Pollack and Allyson Taylor. Pollack went 7 for 12 on her way to 17 points and seven assists, while Taylor dropped a double-double on 16 points and 15 boards. Those seven assists gave Pollack a new career-high. Savana Sharp was another key player, putting up eight points and six rebounds.

Tygarts Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 9-5. As for Pocahontas County, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-4.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Notre Dame the next time they take the court. Tygarts Valley will host Notre Dame at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, while Pocahontas County will host them at 5:45 p.m. on Friday.
