Softball Recap: Make It Five in a Row for Pioneer

Pioneer extended their winning streak to five on Tuesday, bumping their season record up to 19-10 in the process. They walked away with a 5-2 win over the Caston Comets. For the Panthers, this counts as revenge for the 5-1 victory the Comets walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2024.

Lois Layer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on two hits and racked up eight Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Addison Kennell, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI. Hollie Zellers was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one triple and one run.

As for Caston, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-16 record this season. Their defeat continues a trend for the squad, making it three in a row.

On Caston's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Hadlie Coffing gave up three earned (and two unearned) runs on four hits and racked up nine Ks. Coffing has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Caston saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mia Mersch, who went 1-for-2 with one run.

Coming up, Pioneer will be playing at home against Benton Central at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Caston, they will venture away from home to square off against Rochester at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
