Baseball Game Preview: Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets vs. Franklin Heights Falcons

The Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets will challenge the Franklin Heights Falcons at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Mt. Vernon is coming into the game on a three-game losing streak.

Mt. Vernon couldn't beat Bloom-Carroll on Tuesday even though they stacked four runs on them in the sixth inning. The Yellowjackets fell 12-7 to the Bulldogs.

Mt. Vernon got a good showing from Jagger Dohn, who didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Dohn has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Carter Castlemen and Ezra Kurek stepped up to the plate in a big way. Castlemen got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three runs, while Kurek went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Dammon Wolfe, who earned two runs and three stolen bases.

Meanwhile, Franklin Heights can bid farewell to their 16-game losing streak thanks to their game on Wednesday. They walked away with a 10-5 win over Groveport-Madison. The Falcons' offense finally found a way to get into gear: the high-octane performance was a 180-degree turn from their last four games.

Franklin Heights let Dae'Shaun Cowan and Garrett Miller run wild. Cowan went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Miller went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Franklin Heights is 2-0-1 when Cowan posts two or more stolen bases, but 3-19 otherwise. Antwan Steward was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.

Mt. Vernon's loss dropped their record down to 15-9. As for Franklin Heights, their victory bumped their record up to 5-19-1.

Everything went Mt. Vernon's way against Franklin Heights when the teams last played back in April of 2016, as Mt. Vernon made off with an 8-2 win. Will the Yellowjackets repeat their success, or do the Falcons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
