Preview: Evans Knights vs. Brunswick Pirates
Evans has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on The Brunswick Pirates at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Evans will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Georgia Rankings (they are ranked 227th, while Brunswick is ranked 73rd).
Evans scored first but ultimately less than Glynn Academy in their match on Friday. They fell 22-14 to the Terrors.
Despite the loss, Evans got a solid performance out of Rayshaun King, who rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Brunswick had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 33 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They put the hurt on South Effingham with a sharp 38-14 win. The result was nothing new for Brunswick, who have now won four games by 24 points or more so far this season.
Brunswick's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jamarious Towns, who rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown on only ten carries. Brunswick also got help from Tj Mitchell who showed off his sure hands for 171 receiving yards.
Brunswick's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Leading the way was Devin Smith and his three sacks.
Glynn Academy's victory bumped their season record to 7-2 while Evans' defeat dropped theirs to 3-5.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Evans has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 191.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Brunswick struggles in that department as they've been even better at 233 per game. It's looking like Friday's contest might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Evans suffered a grim 28-7 defeat to Brunswick when the teams last played back in October of 2022. Can Evans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
