Lafayette hasn't had much luck against Santa Fe recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Hornets will take on the Raiders at 7:00 p.m. Lafayette is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Lafayette fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Chiefland on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Indians by a score of 9-8. The Hornets just can't catch a break and have now endured three defeats in a row.
Kambry Moseley was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Miley McCray, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Santa Fe entered their tilt with Columbia on Tuesday with seven consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with eight. They had just enough and edged out the Tigers 13-11. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Raiders, who until this game were averaging 3.36 runs allowed.
Makenna Payne looked comfortable as she tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Madisen Crosby, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits she has posted since back in February. J'Lyn Guyden was another key player, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.
Santa Fe kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in eight consecutive contests.
Santa Fe's win was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-1. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for Lafayette, their loss dropped their record down to 9-8.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Lafayette hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .313. However, it's not like Santa Fe struggles in that department as they've averaged .363. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Lafayette might still be hurting after the 13-4 defeat they got from Santa Fe when the teams last played back in February. Can the Hornets avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
