John Carroll Catholic hasn't had much luck against Vero Beach recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Rams will head out on the road to challenge the Indians at 6:00 p.m. John Carroll Catholic is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
John Carroll Catholic proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by six) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Martin County 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Rams have posted since May 8, 2024.
Makayla Ortiz and Isabella Ramirez made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Ortiz tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Ramirez tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. Ortiz has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances. At bat, Ortiz scored two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances, while Ramirez scored a run while going 3-for-4. That's the most runs Ortiz has posted since back in February.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Samantha Rychter, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That double was her first of the season.
Meanwhile, Vero Beach earned a 4-1 win over Satellite on Saturday.
Gabrielle Espich spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, Trinity Bishop was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.
John Carroll Catholic has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Vero Beach, the win got them back to even at 7-7.
Vero Beach's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: John Carroll Catholic has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .434. It's a different story for Vero Beach, though, as they've only averaged .332. Will they be able to contain John Carroll Catholic's hitters?
Everything went John Carroll Catholic's way against Vero Beach in their previous meeting back in February, as John Carroll Catholic made off with a 7-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rams since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
