The Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs are taking a road trip to square off against the Mattoon Greenwave at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Mahomet-Seymour is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
Mahomet-Seymour is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 18 runs on Monday, they were much more limited against Normal Community on Tuesday. They took a 6-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Ironmen. The Bulldogs' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Mahomet-Seymour saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brooklyn Dyer, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Mattoon hadn't done well against Mt. Zion recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Greenwave put the hurt on the Braves with a sharp 12-5 win. The Greenwave not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 11th (when they won 14-2).
Hanna Griffin spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on 11 hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Mj Cowger, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Micheala Starwalt, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
Mattoon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are 2-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Mahomet-Seymour's defeat dropped their record down to 8-12. As for Mattoon, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-13.
Mattoon's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mahomet-Seymour hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .327. It's a different story for Mattoon, though, as they've only averaged .250. Will they be able to contain Mahomet-Seymour's hitters?
Mahomet-Seymour couldn't quite get it done against Mattoon when the teams last played back in May of 2024 as they fell 9-4. Can the Bulldogs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
