Baseball Recap: Fletcher Find Success

It was a proper cat-fight when Fletcher duked it out with Konawa on Thursday. Fletcher sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-3 win over Konawa.

Nathan Mahan made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out 11 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Those 11 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Fletcher's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-7 when he doesn't).

Mahan wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Rayce Stoll, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-4. Fletcher is undefeated when Stoll posts two or more stolen bases, but 4-7 otherwise. Another was Elijah Cagle, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4.

Fletcher now has a winning record of 8-7. As for Konawa, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-2.

Fletcher didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, a 12-0 victory against Tipton on the 27th. As for Konawa, they will square off against Stratford at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
