Basketball Recap: Helix Takes a Loss

Helix blew Monte Vista out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Tuesday Monte Vista got their revenge. The Helix Highlanders fell just short of the Monte Vista Monarchs by a score of 73-70. The Highlanders were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Monarchs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2023.

Monte Vista's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Alex Villanueva led the charge by putting up 20 points and eight boards. Jaren Wright was another key player, scoring 14 points and three steals.

Helix has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-15 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.0 points per game. As for Monte Vista, they pushed their record up to 13-9 with the win, which was their third straight at home.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Helix has already played their next game (against Steele Canyon), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Monte Vista will challenge Olympian at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Monte Vista's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last eight contests.
