Baseball Recap: Columbia City Victorious

Columbia City let Norwell stack five runs on them in the fifth inning on Thursday but luckily Columbia City prevailed anyway. The Eagles sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-6 win over the Knights. The Eagles have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Knights, too.

Grayson Bradberry spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and three unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Maddox Moon, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Columbia City's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 7-8 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Henry Kneller, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

Columbia City was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April.

Columbia City pushed their record up to 16-8 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games. As for Norwell, their loss dropped their record down to 13-10.

Looking ahead, Columbia City will be taking part in a tournament against Angola at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Hornets will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Eagles surely won't give up without a fight. As for Norwell, they will venture away from home to square off against Carroll at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
