Baseball Recap: Athens Comes Up Short

Athens was the 5-3 winner over Wellston when they last played one another back in April of 2025, but their luck changed this time around. The Bulldogs fell just short of the Golden Rockets by a score of 2-1 on Monday. The contest marked the Bulldogs' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Zachary Wakeley was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Athens saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was David Sharp, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double. Mason Sweeney also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Athens now has a losing record of 5-6. As for Wellston, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-5 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens will host Logan at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Wellston, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Piketon at 5:00 p.m.
