Football Recap: Cooper Starts off Right with Win over Azle

Cooper had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They blew past the Azle Hornets 49-25 on Friday. This was payback for the Cougars, who suffered a 41-34 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Cooper had a senior duo take command as Jaden Carrillo rushed for 87 yards and two scores and Peyton Ewing rushed for 98 yards and three TDs on only ten carries. Ewing's longest rush was for an impressive 67 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.

Cooper was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 316 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in September of 2024.

Loss or not, Azle got some senior leadership from Derrek Vowell and Aiden Mackey. Vowell threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns, while Mackey picked up 94 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.

Looking ahead, Cooper will look to takes advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they takes on Abilene at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Azle, they will hit the road for the first time this season to square off against Weatherford at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
