West Carroll is 7-2 against Gleason since March of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The West Carroll War Eagles will challenge the Gleason Bulldogs at 5:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
On Tuesday, West Carroll came up short against Clarksburg and fell 15-11.
Drake O'Bryan and Caleb Vermillion stepped up to the plate in a big way. O'Bryan scored two runs while going 3-for-5, while Vermillion got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three RBI and one stolen base. Those RBI were Vermillion's first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Cole McMinn, who scored two runs while going 1-for-4.
Even though they lost, West Carroll was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .438. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive games.
Gleason not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 2, 2024. They blew past Lake County 13-3. The Bulldogs' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Ty Keeling made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off three hits. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in strikeouts. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Drake Lehmkuhl was incredible, going 2-for-4 with four runs, one triple, and one RBI. He continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Brody Sanders was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-2.
The victory made it two in a row for Gleason and bumps their season record up to 2-5-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for West Carroll, their loss dropped their record down to 1-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. West Carroll has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Gleason struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
West Carroll came out on top in a nail-biter against Gleason in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, sneaking past 11-10. The rematch might be a little tougher for West Carroll since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
