Southington is a perfect 8-0 against Maloney since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Blue Knights will host the Spartans at 6:00 p.m. Southington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
Southington is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Connecticut's top teams: Cheshire, who was ranked eighth at the time (Southington was ranked seventh). The Blue Knights took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Rams on Thursday. The Blue Knights' loss signaled the end of their seven-game winning streak.
Southington saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Reece Archer, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base. That stolen base was Archer's first of the season.
Meanwhile, after only one run in their last contest, Maloney made sure to put some runs up on the board against Platt on Thursday. The Spartans were the clear victors by a 16-3 margin over the Panthers. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by eight runs or more this season.
Stella Cicero made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Maloney got a massive performance out of Jenna Quilty, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases Quilty has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Lacie Volpe, who went 3-for-4 with one home run and five RBI.
Maloney always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .649. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Maloney is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Southington, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-2.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Southington hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .351. However, it's not like Maloney struggles in that department as they've averaged .316. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Southington took their victory against Maloney in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 15-1 score. Will the Blue Knights repeat their success, or do the Spartans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
