Football Game Preview: San Marcos Rattlers vs. Vandegrift Vipers

The San Marcos Rattlers will challenge the Vandegrift Vipers on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

San Marcos is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Saturday. They breezed past Edinburg to the tune of 33-3. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Rattlers' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 150th, while the Bobcats are ranked 515th).

San Marcos got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jordan Lampkin out in front who picked up 183 receiving yards and a pair of TDs. The dominant performance also gave Lampkin a new career-high in receiving touchdowns (two). Another rusher making a difference was Justin Tardy, who rushed for 113 yards and one score.

Meanwhile, Vandegrift entered their tilt with Brandeis on Thursday with six consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with seven. They blew past the Broncos 37-7.

San Marcos' victory bumped their record up to 8-4. As for Vandegrift, their win bumped their record up to 10-2.

Thursday's contest might be decided on the ground. San Marcos has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 173.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Vandegrift struggles in that department as they've been averaging 165.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Thursday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.

San Marcos was taken down by Vandegrift 52-14 in their previous meeting back in November of 2021. Can the Rattlers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
