Baseball Recap: Saratoga Takes a Loss

Saratoga fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Monta Vista on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Matadors by a score of 5-4. The defeat was just more heartbreak for the Falcons who fell 4-2 when the teams previously met back in March.

Doug Bettinger was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two doubles. He is becoming a predictor of Saratoga's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-2 (and 0-8 when he doesn't).

Saratoga has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.5 runs over those games. As for Monta Vista, their record is now 13-7.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Saratoga will venture away from home to take on Prospect at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Monta Vista, they will head out to square off against Terra Nova at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Matadors' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Tigers have averaged an impressive 6.5 runs per game this season.
