Baseball Game Preview: Newton Eagles vs. West Vigo Vikings

Newton hasn't had much luck against West Vigo recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Eagles will head out on the road to challenge the Vikings at 5:30 p.m. Neither Newton nor West Vigo posted many runs in their last games, so it might be the pitching crews that decide this one.

Newton fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Richland County on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Tigers. The Eagles just can't catch a break and have now endured six defeats in a row.

Newton got a good showing from Gavin Meinhart, who pitched four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Meinhart has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.

Meanwhile, West Vigo didn't have quite enough to beat Linton-Stockton on Wednesday and fell 4-2.

Newton's loss dropped their record down to 4-9. As for West Vigo, they suffered their first road defeat, dropping their record down to 2-2.

Newton suffered a grim 14-3 defeat to West Vigo when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
