Baseball Game Preview: Monument Valley Mustangs vs. San Tan Foothills Sabercats

The Monument Valley Mustangs will take on the San Tan Foothills Sabercats in a tournament on Saturday. Monument Valley has given up an average of 15.3 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Friday just wasn't the day for Monument Valley's offense. They came up short against Salome on Friday, falling 20-0. Having soared to a lofty 12 runs in the game before, the Mustangs' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask San Tan Foothills). Their pitchers stepped up to hand Joseph City a 15-0 shutout on Friday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.

Chase Tebaqui was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of San Tan Foothills' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 1-12 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Thomas Pascuel, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

San Tan Foothills always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .618. The last time their OBP was this high was back in March of 2024.

Monument Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 2-13. As for San Tan Foothills, their record now sits at 3-13.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Monument Valley has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like San Tan Foothills struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.

Monument Valley suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to San Tan Foothills in their previous matchup back in April of 2017. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
