Basketball Game Preview: Maury Commodores vs. Hampton Roads Academy Navigators

The Maury Commodores and the Hampton Roads Academy Navigators will face off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Maury comes in on eight and Hampton Roads Academy on five.

On Friday, Maury earned a 48-38 victory over Miller School of Albemarle. The 48-point effort marked the Commodores' lowest-scoring match of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Maury's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Nyla Brown, who posted 12 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Myla Parker, who put up 12 points.

Meanwhile, couldn't have asked for a better way to wrap up 2024 than the 56-27 stomp they got against Indian River. The Navigators have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three games by 29 points or more this season.

Maury better focus on containing Nalani Carter and Kenzie Cooper as the pair were huge in Hampton Roads Academy's win. Carter dropped a double-double on 15 points and 16 boards, while Cooper shot 4-for-7 from deep and dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 boards. Cooper is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last 11 games she's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Zuriel Pendleton-Morant, who earned ten points.

Hampton Roads Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in seven consecutive contests.

Maury's win bumped their record up to 8-0. As for Hampton Roads Academy, their victory bumped their record up to 6-1.

Maury and Hampton Roads Academy were neck-and-neck when the teams last played back in December of 2023, but Maury came up empty-handed after a 43-42 defeat. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Pendleton-Morant, who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine boards.
