Soccer Game Preview: Stoneman Douglas vs. Flanagan

It'll be Battle of the Birds when the Stoneman Douglas face off against the Flanagan at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday... Keep an eye on the score for this one: both posted some lofty goal totals in their previous games.

Stoneman Douglas is headed in fresh off scoring the most goals they have all season. They never let Fort Lauderdale onto the board and left with an 8-0 win on Tuesday. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida soccer rankings (they are ranked 17th, while the Flying L's are ranked 351st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Stoneman Douglas' offense was hitting Fort Lauderdale from everywhere, as seven different players booted in a goal. Laina Engelbart led that balanced group of strikers and accounted for two goals all by herself.

Meanwhile, Flanagan had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 3 goals) and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They put the hurt on the Jaguars with a sharp 6-0 victory. Considering the Falcons have won five contests by more than two goals this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Flanagan is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they scored 27 goals over those six games. As for Stoneman Douglas, their win bumped their record up to 5-0-5.

Stoneman Douglas beat Flanagan by a goal when the teams last played back in December of 2023, winning 2-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Stoneman Douglas since the squad won't have the home-pitch advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
