Recap: South Brunswick Cougars vs. Laney Buccaneers

The South Brunswick Cougars's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their tenth straight loss. They took a serious blow against Laney, falling 71-33. While losing is never fun, South Brunswick can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 497th, while Laney is ranked 36th).

South Brunswick lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jaelon Johnson, who scored ten points along with two steals. Johnson is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Laney to victory, but perhaps none more so than Joshua Helms, who scored 20 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Helms hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. Hezron Driver was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with three steals.

South Brunswick has not been sharp recently as the team's lost 14 of their last 15 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-18 record this season. As for Laney, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 18-2.

South Brunswick will look to defend their home court on Friday against Topsail at 7:30 p.m. South Brunswick is coming into the matchup with six straight losses at home, meaning Topsail will have to defend against a squad hungry for a victory. As for Laney, they will head out on the road to take on New Hanover at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. New Hanover will roll in looking for their 22nd straight victory, something Laney surely won't give up without a fight.
