Baseball Recap: Thornwood Beats Thornton for Their Third Straight Win

Thornwood had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They put the hurt on the Thornton Wildcats with a sharp 18-1 win. With that victory, the Thunderbirds brought their scoring average up to 6.9 runs per game.

Amira Hondras and Kordae Montgomery made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Hondras tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Montgomery pitched two innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Hondras has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. At the plate, Hondras scored two runs and stole five bases while going 1-for-3, while Montgomery scored two runs and stole four bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

In other batting news, Derrion Howard was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing eight bases while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. He continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Emmanuel Pozo was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing six bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.

Thornwood always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .579. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Thornton only posted an OBP of .238.

Thornwood now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Thornton, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-4-1 record this season.

Thornwood will head out to face off against Evergreen Park at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Mustangs' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Thunderbirds' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Thornton, they will face off against Gary West Side at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
