Baseball Game Preview: Mesquite Wildcats vs. Flagstaff Eagles

The Mesquite Wildcats will take on the Flagstaff Eagles in a tournament on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Mesquite gave up the first runs on Friday, but they didn't let that get them down. They were the clear victor by a 16-8 margin over O'Connor. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Wildcats.

Cruz Lantz looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in March of 2024.

On the hitting side, Bently Sandall and Kash Rogers did most of the damage at the plate: Sandall scored three runs while getting on base in all six of his plate appearances, while Rogers scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-5. What's more, Rogers posted three RBI, the most he's had since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jensen Jones, who scored two runs while going 3-for-6.

Mesquite kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits every time they've taken the field this season.

Meanwhile, it was close, but on Friday Flagstaff sidestepped Arcadia for a 10-9 victory. That's two games straight that the Eagles have won by just one run.

Mesquite now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Flagstaff, they now also have a winning record of 2-1.

Everything went Mesquite's way against Flagstaff when the teams last played back in April of 2019, as Mesquite made off with a 7-1 win. Does Mesquite have another victory up their sleeve, or will Flagstaff turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
