It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Eastern had no problem doing just that on Saturday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 victory over the Portsmouth West Senators. This was a revenge game for the Eagles: when they faced off against the Senators back in April, they had to take a 10-9 defeat.
Leah Rader made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out ten batters over eight innings while giving up three earned runs off eight hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Braelyn Bevins, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Eastern's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 21-7. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Portsmouth West, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 15-12 record this season.
Eastern will take on West Jefferson at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Roughriders' pitching crew has only allowed 2.7 runs per game this season, so the Eagles' hitters will have their work cut out for them. Portsmouth West does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
