Basketball Recap: Clay Takes a Loss

Clay lost against Bishop Snyder back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Clay Blue Devils took a blow against the Bishop Snyder Cardinals, falling 60-9. While losing is never fun, the Blue Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 518th, while the Cardinals are ranked 93rd).

Kathryn Moran was Clay's leading scorer, having posted seven points. Hailie Miera held things down on the boards with five rebounds. Annnaliese Hovda took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with two assists.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Bishop Snyder to victory, but perhaps none more so than Shelby Gaines, who went 7 for 12 en route to 18 points in addition to seven rebounds and six steals. Gaines is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 11 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Bryonna Grimes, who went 5 of 8 on her way to 15 points along with eight boards and five steals.

Clay has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-12 record this season. As for Bishop Snyder, the victory was the 11th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-4.

Clay didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 41-29 defeat against Keystone Heights on the 24th. Bishop Snyder has also already played their next game, a 60-45 loss against Orange Park on the 23rd.
