MaxPreps Northern California Top 25 high school football rankings

The top six teams remained firm in the rankings, but previous No. 7 Granite Bay lost to new No. 14 Rocklin, 31-14, in a Sierra Foothill League game in Placer County.

Upsets do happen, though to understand Rocklin's schedule and pedigree, perhaps only the margin of victory was the surprise.

1. (1) De La Salle (Concord) (7-0)
The Spartans rolled previously ranked Logan (Union City) 49-7 in a rematch of the North Coast Section Division I championship. John Velasco rushed for three touchdowns and Boss Tagaloa had two sacks for the Spartans, who have won 33 in a row and 62 of 63.

2. (2) Folsom (8-0)
Jake Browning passed for 443 yards and five touchdowns and ran for a score as the offensive line headed by Sam Whitney again led the way, keying a 56-14 triumph of previous No. 14 Jesuit (Carmichael) in a Delta River League contest. Josiah Deguara had two touchdown catches and Will McClure, Troy Knox and Cole Thompson one each. Browning has a state-leading 38 touchdown passes.

3. (3) Serra (San Mateo) (5-1)
Matthew Fa'aita tossed two touchdowns and the defense sparkled in a 28-7 victory over Valley Christian (San Jose) in West Catholic Athletic League play. Kava Cassidy rushed for 112 yards after being held to 20 in the first half.

4. (4) Elk Grove (8-0)
The Thundering Herd beat previous No. 7 Grant (Sacramento) in a Delta Valley Conference game best known for hard hits and defensive stops. Tommy Arnold scored on a 13-yard quarterback keep in the third quarter and also helped lead a dominant defensive effort with Noah Letuligasenoa Ta'amu, Spencer Sheff, and B'won Canada. Wadus Parker rushed for 84 yards.

5. (5) Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) (8-0)
The Eagles beat Ponderosa (Shingle Springs) 46-0 as nine runners carried 40 times for 383 yards and six scores for an average of 9.58 yards per attempt in a Delta River League game. Ian Broom rushed for 140 yards and two scores and Brandon Lewis went for 111 and two more. The lines continue to play well, including Kyle Dixon and Earl Chism.

6. (6) Bellarmine (San Jose) (5-1)
The Bells defeated St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 42-28 in a rematch of the Central Coast Section Open title game, won by SI 13-10. K.J. Carta-Samuels passed for 191 ard and two touchdowns and Anthony Guttadauro scored twice.

7. (8) Marin Catholic (Kentfield) (8-0)
Morgan Mahalak tossed two touchdowns despite a sore knee and Sam Kilpack ran for three touchdowns to key a 41-0 rout of Justin-Siena (Napa) in Marin County Athletic League action. Mahalak hit Andrew Celis and Paul Kunst for TDs of 40 and 50 yards.

8. (9) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) (6-0)
The Monarchs beat Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco) 42-7 in WCAL play. Dakari Monroe and Chandler Ramirez combined for four touchdowns.

9. (10) Campolindo (Moraga) (7-0)
The Cougars beat Las Lomas (Walnut Creek) 35-20 in DFAL behind QB Andrew Zolintakis, who passed for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Campolindo is closing in on a third successive title.

10. (11) Del Oro (Loomis) (5-2)
Dylan Kainrath rushed for three touchdowns and Greg Eason scored once behind more superb line play in a 35-21 win over Roseville in Sierra Foothill League action. Del Oro led 35-3 at one point before the reserves took over. The losses were to NorCal No. 1 De La Salle (Concord) and Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks).

11. (12) Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) (6-1)
Ian Book passed for 166 yards and four touchdowns, hitting Justin Priest three times, in a 56-7 rout of Sheldon (Sacramento) in Delta River League play. Josh Wellman rushed for 69 yards and three touchdowns.

12. (13) Clayton Valley Charter (Concord) (6-1)
Gabe Taylor had the best passing game of his career, completing 9 of 12 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns as the Ugly Eagles beat Ygnacio Valley 35-0.

13. (14) Deer Valley (Antioch) (7-0)
Kyle McDonald rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns in the first half for the Wolverines in a 49-7 win over Antioch in Bay Valley Athletic League play. Nsimba Webster rushed for two scores.

14. (24) Rocklin (5-2)
The Thunder beat previous No. 7 Granite Bay 31-14 in Sierra Foothill League action as Logan Webb passed for 185 yards and two touchdowns and Andrew Castle ran for two scores in a Sierra Foothill League contest. Granite Bay won in double overtime a year ago. Skyler Gonzalez helped lead a physical defense. The losses were to No. 5 Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) and No. 11 Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills).

15. (7) Granite Bay (5-2)
The Grizzlies fell to No. 7 Rocklin, 31-14, in Sierra Foothill League action despite 192 yards passing and two touchdowns by Josh Neal to Dylan Keeney. The other loss was to No. 1 Folsom. Wins include NorCal-ranked Pittsburg.

16. (15) El Cerrito (5-2)
The Gauchos had a bye. The losses were to No. 6 Bellarmine (San Jose) 28-25 and No. 9 Campolindo (Moraga) 42-27.

17. (17) California (San Ramon) (6-1)
The Grizzlies beat Monte Vista (Danville) 31-28 as Cameron Owen scored the game-winner on a run to cap a 92-yard drive in East Bay Athletic League action. Simi Hingano rushed for 97 yards and a score.

18. (18) St. Mary's (Stockton) (6-2)
Kaleb Parrish passed for 141 yards and two touchdowns on just four completions in a 53-14 rout of Edison (Stockton) in Tri-City Athletic League play. Marcell Spady and Parker Caston each rushed for two touchdowns. Caston rushed for 171 yards. Kyle Dawson had three of his team's 7.5 sacks. The losses were to No. 1 De La Salle (Concord) and No. 10 Del Oro (Loomis).

19. (16) Grant (Sacramento) (4-3)
The Pacers lost to No. 2 Elk Grove 7-3 in a defensive battle in what could be the Delta Valley Conference title match. The other losses were by three points each to No. 10 Del Oro (Loomis) and No. 11 Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills).

20. (19) Burbank (Sacramento) (5-2)
The Titans rolled McClatchy (Sacramento) 64-0 in Metropolitan Conference play as the Titans ran for 578 yards for an average of 21.4 yards per carry. Calvin Green and Ernest Jenkins each ran for two scores. The losses were to higher-ranked Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) and Grant (Sacramento).

21. (20) Pittsburg (5-2)
Harris Ross rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns and Jaylyn Morgan went for 113 and two as the Pirates beat Liberty (Brentwood) 28-13 in Bay Valley Athletic League play. Ross is a verbal commitment to Oregon State. The losses were to Analy (Sebastopol), 37-21, and Granite Bay, 39-35.

22. (22) St. Francis (Mountain View) (5-1)
William Fisher-Colbrie passed for 145 yards in completing all six of his passes, three for touchdowns, to lead the Lancers past Riordon (San Francisco) 49-14 in West Catholic Athletic League action. Alex Andrighetto had 92 yards of offense and Landon Baty opened the game with an 85-yard kickoff return for a score.

23. (23) Central Catholic (Modesto) (6-1)
The Raiders were the last section-ranked team to have a bye. The Western Athletic Conference favorites are led by RB Matt Ringer. The loss was to St. Mary's (Stockton).

24. (25) Casa Grande (Petaluma) (7-0)
The Gauchos beat Rancho Cotate (Rohnert Park) 42-13 in North Bay League action as JaJuan Lawson passed for 241 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a score. This is the program's first 7-0 start.

25. (NR) Rio Linda (6-1)
The Knights beat Christian Brothers (Sacramento) 40-13 in Capital Valley Conference play as Marcel Brown ran for 167 yards and four touchdowns and Stephen Andrews ran for 104 and passed for 80 and a score. The loss was on a last-play blocked field goal that was returned for the winning touchdown in a game in which Brown did not play.
