Baseball Recap: New Ulm Takes Down Ranked Marshall

New Ulm faced Marshall in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Eagles blew past the Tigers 19-8. With that victory, the Eagles brought their scoring average up to 7.6 runs per game.

Tanner Backer made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Backer was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, New Ulm got a massive performance out of Owen Castleman, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, three RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Hunter Larson, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.

New Ulm always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

New Ulm pushed their record up to 5-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Marshall, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 7-1.

Looking ahead, New Ulm will face off against Tri-City United [Montgomery-Lonsdale/Le Center] at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Marshall, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Mankato West at 5:00 p.m.
