Recap: Thayer Central Titans vs. Sandy Creek Cougars
The Thayer Central Titans waltzed into their matchup on Saturday with eight straight wins but they left with nine. In a tight match that could have gone either way, they made off with a 48-47 victory over Sandy Creek. Given Thayer Central's advantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 62nd, while Sandy Creek is ranked 216th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Thayer Central got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Piper Havel out in front who scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Natalie Tietjen was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with six rebounds.
Sandy Creek lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Emma Fisher, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Sophie Dane, who scored ten points along with four steals.
Thayer Central pushed their record up to 10-2 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for Sandy Creek, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost eight of their last ten matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-11 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Thayer Central's road trip will continue as they head out to face Sutton at 5:50 p.m. on January 22nd. As for Sandy Creek, they will take on Fairbury at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Fairbury focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 on Monday.
