Basketball Recap: Five Straight Home Victories for Steward

It's playoff time, and Steward had no trouble coming through when it counted. They came out on top against The Covenant Eagles by a score of 72-59 on Wednesday. The Spartans haven't had any issues with the Eagles recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.

Steward got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Ava Johnson out in front who dropped a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. Johnson has been hot recently, having also posted two or more blocks the last four times she's played. Ella Grace Saunders was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with 16 points and nine boards.

Steward smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 11 consecutive contests.

Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Delaney Poindexter, who went 6-for-15 en route to 23 points and five rebounds. Those 23 points gave Poindexter a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kerrigan Poindexter, who went 6-for-9 to rack up 17 points.

Steward's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-11. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 30.2 points. As for The Covenant, their defeat dropped their record down to 20-9.

Looking ahead, Steward will take on Norfolk Christian at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. Norfolk Christian will roll in looking for their 11th straight victory, something Steward surely won't give up without a fight. The Covenant does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
