Softball Recap: Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy vs. Excelsior Charter Eagles
Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy extended their losing streak to 11 on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 0-11 in the process. They lost 16-5 to the Excelsior Charter Eagles. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against Excelsior Charter this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 10-0 on Tuesday.
Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mia Higareda, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Isabelle Vanlaar also deserves some recognition as she scored her first runs of the season.
As for Excelsior Charter, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-8-1. Considering they have won seven games by more than nine runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
On Excelsior Charter's side, Rylie Hunsaker made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. Hunsaker has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs.
In other batting news, Samantha Minghelli was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Tristen Gonzalez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.
