Football Preview: Sequoyah Chiefs vs. Coffee Trojans

After each having a week off, the Sequoyah Chiefs and the Coffee Trojans will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Sequoyah knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 31 points or more in their past four contests -- so hopefully Coffee likes a good challenge.

Last Friday, Sequoyah didn't have too much trouble with Creekview as they won 31-14. The Chiefs have beaten the Grizzlies the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Grizzlies has come to flipping the script.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Sequoyah was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 275 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 159 rushing yards in three consecutive matchups.

Sequoyah's defense stepped up as well, laying out Alex Penrod five times. In that department, Noah Normile was the leader with two sacks. Another thorn in Creekview's side was Michael Fountain, who picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made six total tackles.

Meanwhile, Coffee played a tough game last Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They came up short against Thomas County Central, falling 41-17. While losing is never fun, the Trojans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 113th, while the Yellow Jackets are ranked fifth).

Sequoyah will need to focus on slowing down Bobby Reynolds, one of several Coffee players who made an impact when they last played. He rushed for 170 yards. Reynolds is becoming a predictor of Coffee's success: when he posts at least 80 rushing yards the team is 2-1 (and 2-5 when he doesn't).

Sequoyah's record is now 9-1. As for Coffee, they dropped their record down to 4-6 with the loss, which was their third straight at home.

Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Sequoyah has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 212.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Coffee struggles in that department as they've been averaging 200.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.

Sequoyah suffered a grim 72-48 defeat to Coffee in their previous meeting back in November of 2024. Thankfully for the Chiefs, Tyrese Woodgett (who rushed for 605 yards and seven scores while picking up 30.3 yards per carry) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
