Football Game Preview: Sunnyvale vs. Canton Eagles

Sunnyvale will challenge the Canton Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Sunnyvale comes in on four and Canton on nine.

Sunnyvale is headed into the matchup after thoroughly thrashing Wills Point: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Sunnyvale blew Wills Point out of the water with a 62-7 final score. The final result isn't all that surprising considering Sunnyvale's considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 200th, while Wills Point is ranked 897th).

Sunnyvale's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Jaden Cross, who rushed for 86 yards and three touchdowns on only five carries, and Cayson Maupin, who threw for 175 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 83.3% of his passes. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 57 yards. Another big playmaker for Sunnyvale was Greyson Walker, who returned a punt for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Canton's game on Friday was close up to the half, but then they kicked things up a notch. They put the hurt on Ford with a sharp 35-10 victory. Fans of the Eagles have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 20+ points.

Sunnyvale's win bumped their record up to 8-1. As for Canton, their victory bumped their record up to 9-0.

Sunnyvale strolled past Canton in their previous meeting back in November of 2024 by a score of 35-20. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sunnyvale since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
