Midway is 1-9 against Oakdale since April of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Midway Green Wave will take on the Oakdale Eagles at 6:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
The home team had come away the winner the last four times Midway and Sunbright had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. Midway put the hurt on Sunbright with a sharp 29-11 win on Friday. With that victory, the Green Wave brought their scoring average up to 7.9 runs per game.
Rylan Brewer made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Brewer was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
In other batting news, Midway got a massive performance out of Dawson Buckner, who scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in five of his six plate appearances. Peyton Steele also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Midway was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .536. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Oakdale, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They were the clear victor by a 12-1 margin over Scott on Friday. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Eagles' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.
Like Midway, Oakdale also got a great game from a two-way player: Morgan Scott. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over five innings pitched. What's more, Scott gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs. Oakdale is undefeated when Scott posts two or more runs, but 0-3 otherwise.
In other batting news, Isaac Collins was excellent, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in runs. Another player making a difference was Liam Smith, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI.
Midway's win ended a six-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-5. As for Oakdale, the victory got them back to even at 3-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Midway has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Oakdale struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Midway might still be hurting after the 7-1 loss they got from Oakdale in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can Midway avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
