Softball Recap: Broad Run Picks Up Third Consecutive Victory

Broad Run and Stone Bridge pushed the score to 17-11 the last time they played Stone Bridge, but on Thursday defenses reigned supreme. The Spartans sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Spartans have posted against the Bulldogs since May 7, 2018.

Anna Weltens was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

The victory was the third in a row for Broad Run, bringing their record up to 6-2. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Stone Bridge, they are on a four-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Broad Run will face off against Rock Ridge at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Phoenix have averaged an impressive 9.2 runs per game this season. As for Stone Bridge, they will square off against Heritage at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
