The Stonington Bears will head out on the road to take on the Plainfield Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Stonington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
Stonington had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 18-run drubbing they dealt Windham on Monday. The Bears blew past the Whippets 20-2. The Bears haven't had any issues with the Whippets recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.
Jace Wolfradt made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over four innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one hit in four consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two triples, three RBI, and two runs. Those two triples gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Finn Eck, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two triples, three runs, and four RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Jacob Schrage was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Stonington always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .625. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Plainfield came up short against Ledyard on Monday, falling 16-1. The Panthers haven't had much luck with the Colonels recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Stonington pushed their record up to 9-3 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Plainfield, their loss dropped their record down to 3-8.
Stonington skirted past Plainfield 10-9 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bears since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
