Archbishop McCarthy hasn't had much luck against Stoneman Douglas recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks will square off against the Stoneman Douglas Eagles at 6:00 p.m. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Archbishop McCarthy is headed into the contest having just posted their closest win since May 10, 2024 on Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Deerfield Beach, sneaking past 4-2.

Jose Torres tossed a big game, striking out eight batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. Archbishop McCarthy is 2-1 when Torres allowsone or fewer earned runs, but 3-7 otherwise.
At the plate, Miguel Delgado was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Alejandro Cabral, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Stoneman Douglas had already won 12 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.1 runs) and they went ahead and made it 13 on Wednesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Falcons an 11-0 shutout. That 11 run margin sets a new team best for the Eagles this season.
Gio Rojas was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-2.
In other pitching news, Daniel Tartaglia looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one walk any time he's pitched this season.
Back at the plate, Drew Freeman and Nick Diaz did most of the damage at the plate: Freeman got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three RBI and one double, while Diaz scored four runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Jake Rizzo was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
Stoneman Douglas pushed their record up to 14-1 with the victory, which was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Archbishop McCarthy, their record is now 5-8.
Archbishop McCarthy suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to Stoneman Douglas when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can Archbishop McCarthy avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
