Baseball Recap: Surry County Wins Going Away Against Greensville County

Surry County won the last time they faced Greensville County and things went their way on Thursday too. The Cougars blew past the Eagles 14-1. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by seven runs or more this season.

Dalton Pierce and Tanner Keckler were a major factor no matter where they played. Throwing, Pierce struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Keckler tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. That's the most strikeouts Pierce has posted since back in March of 2024. At bat, Pierce scored three runs and stole four bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances, while Keckler went 3-for-4 with six stolen bases, six RBI, and one run. Pierce also put up an RBI, which was his first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jeremiah Lightfoot, who scored three runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-4. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Mathew Johnson was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.

Surry County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .564. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

The win made it two in a row for Surry County and bumps their season record up to 4-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 1 runs in those games. As for Greensville County, they are on a 12-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.
