Softball Game Preview: Springfield Blue Devils vs. Avon Eagles

The Springfield Blue Devils will take on the Avon Eagles in a tournament on Saturday. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Springfield is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They blew past Ross 10-1 on Thursday. The victory continues a trend for the Blue Devils in their matchups with the Little Giants: they've now won seven in a row.

Meanwhile, after low-scoring totals in their previous four matchup, Avon brought some dynamite into their most recent contest. They never let Brecksville-Broadview Heights get on the board and left with an 11-0 win on Friday. That looming 11-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Eagles yet this season.

Maria Young made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 11 over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Avon got a massive performance out of Averie Reichert, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run. That home run was Reichert's first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jocelin Ochs, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.

Avon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

The victory got Avon back to even at 7-7. As for Springfield, they now have a winning record of 6-5.

Springfield skirted past Avon 3-2 in their previous meeting back in May of 2022. Do the Blue Devils have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
