Basketball Recap: Akron Picks Up Second Consecutive Win

Merino came into Thursday's match looking for another win against Akron, but Anderson Filla wouldn't allow it. Akron walked away with a 52-41 victory over Merino on Thursday thanks in part to Filla, who went 8-for-10 to rack up 19 points and five boards. He has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times he's played.

Caleb Poss was another key player, going 5-for-7 on his way to 12 points. What's more, he also posted a 71% field goal percentage, which is the highest he's achieved since back in February of 2024.

Despite the loss, Merino saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Zavier Trenkle went 5-for-11 en route to 14 points and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Reid Samber, who posted nine points.

The win made it two in a row for Akron and bumps their season record up to 9-8. As for Merino, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-11.

Akron has already played their next contest, a 53-50 loss against Wray on the 19th. As for Merino, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 52-41 defeat against Stratton on the 14th.
