Basketball Game Preview: Highland Huskies vs. Onteora Eagles

The Highland Huskies are taking a road trip to face off against the Onteora Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Highland is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They enjoyed a cozy 68-53 win over Dover on Tuesday. The high-flying offensive performance was a huge turnaround for the Huskies considering their 23-point performance the match before.

While Onteora didn't have the best season last year (they finished 5-12), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They rang in the new year with a 44-33 victory over Rondout Valley on Friday. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 296th, while the Ganders are ranked 624th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Onteora's win came from a few key players Highland will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Ryder Bickel, who posted eight points and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Brenden Lomoe-Thompson, who put up 13 points and six rebounds.

Highland now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Onteora, their win ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 5-2.

Highland strolled past Onteora in their previous matchup back in January of 2024 by a score of 51-35. The rematch might be a little tougher for Highland since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
