Basketball Recap: Columbus Takes a Loss

Columbus was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a 71-60 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Benson Bunnies. The Discoverers were down 55-34 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.

Despite the defeat, Columbus saw an underclassman step up: freshman Jaxson Vasicek dropped a double-double on 22 points and ten rebounds. Another player making a difference was Quinn Freshour, who posted ten points along with seven assists and five boards.

Even though they lost, Columbus was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in December of 2023.

Benson's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ne'Rae Lee, who went 9 for 14 on his way to 23 points. The dominant performance gave Lee a new career-high in points. Goanar Bamach was another key player, dropping a double-double on 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Columbus' loss dropped their record down to 5-13. As for Benson, their victory bumped their record up to 9-12.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Columbus will head out to take on Burke at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Columbus is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.1 points per game this season. As for Benson, they are taking a road trip to square off against Papillion-LaVista at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Benson also hasn't been messing around on offense: they've averaged 64.4 points per game.
