Basketball Recap: Plainfield South Cougars vs. Plainfield East Bengals
The Plainfield South Cougars came tearing into Thursday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 66-54 win over Plainfield East. Given Plainfield South's advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 124th, while the Bengals are ranked 317th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Jazlynn Foster, who dropped a double-double on 28 points and 14 rebounds. She continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Destynia Mcgruder, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Plainfield East lost, one person who can't be blamed is Lexi Sepulveda. Despite the final result, she scored 19 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. That was a full 35.2% of Plainfield East's points, marking the eighth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Addie Haughian, who scored 13 points.
Plainfield South's victory was their ninth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 18-8. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.8 points per game. As for Plainfield East, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 14 of their last 18 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-17 record this season.
Plainfield South will look to defend their home court on Saturday against the Foxes at 12:00 p.m. Yorkville and the Cougars are at an even 3-3 over their past six head-to-heads. As for Plainfield East, they will head out on the road to take on the Tigers at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Joliet West is coming into the game on a three-game losing streak.
