Baseball Recap: Lake Central Wins High-Profile Match Against Homestead

Lake Central faced Homestead in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Indians came out on top against the Spartans by a score of 8-3. That's more bragging rights for the Indians, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Grant Mercer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on eight hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Dylan Hein was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Jake Figg was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.

Lake Central is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-4 record this season. As for Homestead, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 18-5.

The Braves will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Spartans surely won't give up without a fight.
