Baseball Recap: Speedway Sparkplugs vs. Covenant Christian Warriors
Speedway extended their losing streak to five on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 1-8-1 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 2-0 heartbreaker at the hands of the Covenant Christian Warriors. That's two games in a row now that the Sparkplugs have lost by exactly two runs.
Luke Chastain was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off nine hits. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single walk, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024.
As for Covenant Christian, they pushed their record up to 7-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of two runs across that stretch.
On Covenant Christian's side, not much got past Nolan Guzman, who gave up just three hits and racked up eight Ks to keep Speedway off the board. Guzman has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Blake Cope was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases. He has been hot recently, having posted two or more stolen bases the last four times he's played. Eli Kegeris also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Coming up, Speedway will square off against Indianapolis Bishop Chatard at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Covenant Christian, they will head out on the road to challenge Perry Meridian at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
