Softball Game Preview: Deering Rams vs. Cheverus Stags

Deering is 1-9 against Cheverus since May of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Rams will venture away from home to challenge the Stags at 4:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Deering took a seven-run defeat the last time they faced off against Massabesic, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Rams narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Mustangs 12-10. The Rams' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Meanwhile, Cheverus had already won nine in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it ten on Wednesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Knights a 15-0 shutout. With that win, the Stags brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.

Abby Kelly was a standout: she went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Maddie Brown, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Cheverus' victory bumped their record up to 14-4. As for Deering, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-10.

Deering suffered a grim 21-2 defeat to Cheverus when the teams last played back in May of 2025. Can the Rams avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
