Football Recap: Waitsburg Comes Up Short in High-Profile Matchup with Pomeroy

Waitsburg faced Pomeroy in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Cardinals took a blow against the Pirates, falling 80-46. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Saturday (42), the Cardinals still had to take the loss.

Jayton Gleason and Landen Henry certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Gleason rushed for 141 yards and three TDs while picking up 8.8 yards per carry, while Henry picked up 297 receiving yards and four scores. Gleason's longest rush was for an incredible 77 yards.

Even if they lost, Waitsburg's defensive line still kept up the pressure with six sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Koyen Fortune and Victor Whitmore, who racked up four sacks between them. Whitmore has been hot recently, having posted at least one sack the last three times he's played.

Kyzer Herres continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Pomeroy, rushing for 316 yards and six touchdowns while picking up 7.5 yards per carry. Thanks to that big game, Herres is now up to 16 rushing touchdowns on the season. Another player making a difference was Vinnie Vecchio, who rushed for 50 yards and a pair of TDs.

This is the second loss in a row for Waitsburg and nudges their season record down to 4-3. As for Pomeroy, the win keeps them at an undefeated 7-0.

Coming up, Waitsburg will challenge St. John-Endicott at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cardinals will be up against the Eagles' rather soft defense (which has allowed 56.33 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Pomeroy, they will take on Dayton at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Pirates will need to watch out since the Bulldogs have now posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season.
